Why I think about antioxidants more than protein

Let's Talk About Free Radicals 🍓

Hi friend,

If you've spent any time in the wellness world, you've probably heard the term "free radicals" tossed around — usually paired with a warning. But what are they, really?

Free radicals are unstable molecules that are missing an electron. To find balance, they "steal" one from nearby healthy cells — and that theft causes damage. Some free radical production is completely normal (it even happens through everyday cellular respiration!), but it also comes from things like air pollution, cigarette smoke, pesticides, x-rays, and certain foods. When free radicals build up faster than our bodies can handle, it's called oxidative stress — and over time, that stress can contribute to arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and Alzheimer's.

Here's the good news: antioxidants are your body's natural defense. They donate the very electron a free radical is looking for, without becoming unstable themselves — stopping the damage before it spreads.

As someone who has lived with arthritis for over eight years, I think about free radicals more than the average person (occupational hazard of being a health coach, ha!). Some days I catch myself considering the antioxidants in my meals even more than my protein intake. Not that protein doesn't matter — it absolutely does — but disease prevention and management are close to my heart.

The simplest way to fight back? Add color to your plate. Sunflower seeds, berries, cherries, bell peppers, artichokes, ginger, dark chocolate, and yes — even your morning coffee — are all antioxidant powerhouses.

Every colorful, mindful bite is a small step toward a healthier future. 🌿

Simple Swaps

Swap your usual afternoon snack for a handful of walnuts + a small bowl of berries. Small swap, big antioxidant boost — and a great way to start noticing where color (or the lack of it) shows up on your plate.

If oxidative stress and inflammation feel personal to you — whether that's a flare-up or just wanting to feel better in your body — I'd love to help you build a plan that works for your life.

What's Blooming

I'm working on a few new resources for anti-inflammatory eating and autoimmune health— can't wait to share soon. In the meantime, I'd love to hear: what's one colorful food you're adding to your plate this week? Hit reply and let me know!

See you next time!
